Sleep as much as possible
It may seem obvious, but if you get enough sleep then your body will thank you. It can be hard to balance a lifestyle of partying most nights with sight-seeing most days. Not to mention the disruptively long journeys and changes in time zones. But getting enough sleep will help you to stay healthy and prevent you from getting run down and sick.
Take some time off
Most people move from place to place pretty quickly, as they only have a limited amount of time on their hands to travel. And of course, you want to get the most of your trip! Make sure that whatever your schedule looks like, you set some time aside to chill out and rest.
Spend a few days in one place where you don’t have to rush. Cook, relax and read a good travel book. This will help you to de-stress. After all, a scheduled ‘day off’ is better than one stuck in bed not feeling well later down the line.
Staying hydrated is incredibly important, especially in hot countries. Always make sure that you carry a filled water bottle while traveling, this will allow you to quickly re-hydrate. It’s effective and easy! However, first make certain that you are in a destination where the drinking water is safe.
Cook fresh meals
It is always nice to eat out while traveling and one of the best ways to experience a new destination. It can also be a lot cheaper and easier, especially if you are traveling solo. Only problem, the food from that cheap street food vendor outside your hostel might taste amazing, but you don’t know what ingredients that $1 Pad Thai contains.
Many countries have amazing markets where you can buy an abundance of fresh products at local prices. So start cooking yourself something healthy instead. And if you buy a container you can eat it the following night too, or take it on your bus journey instead of buying snacks.
When traveling for a long time I take Tupperware and spices from destination to destination. That way I can always whip up a tasty and healthy meal without buying new ingredients each and every time.
Supplement with Vitamins
Disclaimer: I strongly believe that nature provides everything our body needs! Okay, I had to get this one off my chest first. However, I have traveled to countries before that run very low on resources. Therefore, they are not always able to provide some of the healthy food options we are used to.
That’s when supplementing your meals with multi-vitamins is helpful.
Now I don’t suggest you just randomly choose vitamins that sound healthy. Rather identify what your body really needs. Get a FREE nutritional assessment with Vitamin Packs and stay healthy while traveling.
I know it’s not easy to resist the temptation of all the delicious food offered in exotic countries. But you must do your best to limit your intake of unhealthy snacks.
In South America for example, they love fried food and cheese, but also fresh fruit juices and exotic fruits. You will most likely find an empanada stand and fresh fruit stall on every corner. Therefore, try to vary what you purchase and include some healthier options too.
Instead of having that free bread roll at breakfast, swap it for some fruit and muesli at the local market as it will fill you for much longer.
Explore by foot
It’s so simple, but walk, walk everywhere. Walking around and getting lost is also a great way to see a city. Do a walking tour as these are usually tip-based and are also a cheap way to see the sights at the same time.
Of course, be aware and research safer areas before you set off. Girl, don’t get yourself robbed, please!
Thankfully, many touristic sights can be reached by foot without taking a taxi or bus, so go for it. It may not feel like much exercise but the cumulative effect of walking every day will be great for your health. A good way to do it is by getting a bus to the sight and then walk back once you know the route.
Try and go on hikes to interesting places or climb a mountain on your spare day. These kinds of activities often make for a cheap way to spend your time and you will get to see some amazing views.

Rent a bike
This depends on the area but it can be a great way to see a city or town and get some exercise at the same time. I have done a bike tour in Bogota, peddled my way around a vineyard in Santiago and taken a ride along the majestic Ruta De Las Cascadas in Ecuador. It is often cheap to borrow a bike for a few days and you can see so much more of a place than by foot.
Adapt to your surroundings
Even if you are staying in a busy city or at a relaxing beach, use the opportunity to adapt your routine. If you are at a beach, go for a run, practice yoga, swim, surf or play volleyball (great way to meet people).
If you are in a city, then walk around, go to a park or make the most of an outdoor gym – you will find that there are lots of outdoor gyms across different cities. Use of the opportunity and get fit for free!
Check what your hostel has to offer and get involved. Some hostels put on salsa nights or offer Yoga/Pilates classes. Don’t be afraid to try something new!
Workout with Youtube
Most hostels have common areas. Find a nice spot and start your workout, who knows maybe other people will like to join in. No matter if you start your day with a run, a swim or by stretching, just do something. You will see it will give you some new energy and help you start the day right.
I don’t claim that these ideas will completely change your life, however, they are easy ways to stay healthy while traveling. Many times we forget to look after ourselves because we are so busy trying to explore. But forget that we need to be healthy and rested to enjoy life to the fullest.
Putting some of these practices into your daily routine will help you to feel your best while traveling.
